![]() Leilani’s prose mesmerises you go with her, wherever she decides to take youĪnd she delivers many killer lines along the way, sharpened by unexpected details and cynical insights. ![]() But Leilani’s prose mesmerises you go with her, wherever she decides to take you. Leilani’s setup, manoeuvring Edie into their family home in New Jersey, stretches credulity, however, as do a few unlikely set pieces featuring the inscrutable Rebecca (dragging Edie into a moshpit at a thrash metal concert, for instance). ![]() Pleasingly, Edie’s relationship with the older Eric soon takes second place to stranger, subtler, more complex ones: with his wife, Rebecca – the cool, capable negative image of the hot mess that is Edie – and with their adopted black preteen daughter, Akila. This is an elevated example of the “millennial novel”, swerving cliche. But Leilani writes with such biting distinctiveness that, while Luster may feel extremely zeitgeisty, it never seems like it’s chasing or overly beholden to it. ![]() There’s familiarity in her messiness: her attempts to fill the void with sexual attention, her devaluing and debasing herself and her body. Edie is the sort of flawed female character we’re seeing much more of in fiction and on screen. ![]()

![]() ![]() Leslie’s stories, Simon Snow is a teenage hero, who battles against the Insidious Humdrum: a being intent on destroying all magic. He first appeared in Rowell’s novel, Fangirl (2013)-a coming-of-age YA romance about a university student, Cath, who writes gay, enemies-to-lovers fanfiction for a series a bit like Harry Potter. You might not know Simon’s name, but his story is probably familiar. ![]() Having dealt with murder, depression and, demons, shouted defiance and questioned reality, Queen’s iconic anthem “Bohemian Rhapsody” ends softly and quietly with “Any way the wind blows.” So, too, Rainbow Rowell’s trilogy about Simon Snow-an orphan who learned he was the Chosen One, went to British magic school, fell in love, vanquished a great evil, and then had to learn what to do afterwards. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is not surprising for Gale readers, as Gale, an out gay man, writes often and well about sexuality. “I didn’t decide, ‘Now for an historical novel!’ Rather I found myself more and more possessed by the material suggested by the fragments of my great-grandfather’s story,” and Gale has been reported many times as saying that for the purposes of fiction, and to account for surprising decisions from his ancestor’s known but sketchy life, he ‘turned’ his great-grandfather gay. If you had to write a précis of this book it would read something like a historical romance, complete with abandonment of wife and family, a journey across the ocean to a strange and inhospitable land, the finding of love in the most unlikely place, a world war, murder, insanity, tragedy, and a villain of truly despicable proportions, but Gale avoids all the possible clichés that would otherwise render such a story fit only for the sensational shelves of suburban bookshops patronised by retired ladies. A Place Called Winter is epic in its geography, historic in its time and language, and romantic in its tone. ![]() This is a very different book, Gale’s latest, from his other work which have usually been an insular look at a group of people in a localised area, usually a small Cornish community. ![]() ![]() "Lawlor’s biography captures both Marianne’s spirit and the restrictive norms of the time, which couldn’t hold back this daring naturalist." -Booklist This is an impeccably attuned biography of a woman who broke the rules to the benefit of all." - School Library Journal, Starred Review ![]() ★ "The illustrations are beautifully done, with attention and care carrying the spirit of North’s paintings throughout. It is an extraordinary piece of luck for a writer to find someone who is willing to discuss a work in progress, someone who can enter the world of the story and gossip about the characters as if they were real people, who will question their motivations, scrutinize their actions, complain when they step out of character, and cast a light on a side of them their creator may have missed - someone who will take the work as seriously as the author does. Many people offered advice, support, and encouragement during the "quite some time" it took to finish this project.
